ARTIST COLLABORATION:
Dog Save The People x HANA KIM
We are pleased to launch a new artist collaboration featuring merchandise by dog-centric artists where purchases will support service dog training. Raising and training a service dog takes approximately 2+ years and costs an estimated $50,000 per dog. As part of this collaboration, our show and the artists have agreed to split profits and donate these funds to service dog training programs. Our donations will focus on non-profit groups that professionally train service dogs and give them away for free to those in need. We are particularly interested in helping fund community service dogs or facility dogs that work in a school, hospital, or senior center because these dogs touch many people’s lives. Thanks for considering purchases from our artist collaboration collection to support this worthy cause.
About Hana Kim - @kimanaroom
We’re happy to share our first collaboration with illustrator Hana Kim (@kimanaroom on Instagram).
Hana Kim was born and raised in South Korea and now works as a designer in Montreal, Canada. She started painting in 2015, and her art has continued to grow across digital illustration and beyond. Her drawings are inspired by everyday moments, from people to nature to emotions. And, of course, dogs!
We were initially attracted to Hana’s artwork for its bright-colored palette, fanciful backdrops, and loosely drawn pooches. But what really spoke to us was how she used an outsized scale to show dogs supporting humans in extraordinary ways. This reflects the emotional heart of the Dog Save The People podcast.
Her first illustration shows how dogs comfort us, making us feel like we’re floating on clouds when our furry friends are at our side. Her second illustration captures how dogs teach us to pause, smell the flowers, and enjoy living in the moment.
Our Artist Q&A with Hana is featured below, and all her t-shirt designs are available to buy here.
Artist Interview with HANA KIM
How has your interest in art developed?
Over the past few years, my interest in art has grown a lot. Initially, my artwork primarily consisted of 2D graphics, where I would depict aspects of my daily life, emotions, and dogs. As time passed, I experimented with various artistic methods and materials to find what resonated with me the most. Working with clay and exploring watercolor techniques became some of my favorite ways to create art. To diversify my artistic approach and explore more subjects, I began using 3D programs, allowing me to blend my 2D graphics with 3D elements in my work.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Capturing daily life in my art has always felt natural to me because my artwork often reflects myself. Every moment of my daily life, whether ordinary or extraordinary, can be an inspiration. From the world around me, the things I see, and the emotions I experience. Sometimes, a simple conversation with a friend, a movie, or a piece of music can spark my creativity. I enjoy infusing my art with daily life experiences, personal interpretations, and emotions.
What have you noticed about the dog culture in Canada?
In Canada, the dog culture is thriving. It’s common to see people walking their dogs in parks, the streets, and even cafes. What struck me the most when I moved here was the close bond between people and their dogs. Dogs are not just pets; they are cherished members of the family.
This sense of peace and unity between humans and dogs in Canada has profoundly impacted my art. It’s a calm environment that provides me with the time and the right mindset to create. The serene atmosphere and the loving relationships between people and their dogs inspire me to capture those emotions in my artwork.
Why are dogs a favorite subject in your art?
My strong connection to dogs comes from appreciating their pure, loving, and precious nature. The loyalty and love they give are just indescribable. I truly believe that the bond between humans and dogs is something incredibly special and powerful, and it’s a theme I can’t help but capture and express in my art.
I’ve always had a fondness for drawing dogs, but It was during my time in Toronto that I truly began to focus on them. The huge and adorable dogs were impossible to ignore. Drawing dogs brings me a sense of pure joy and happiness - it’s like art therapy.
When I create art featuring dogs, I aim to convey their purity and the serene presence they bring to everyday life. I focus on their poses, facial expressions, and the connection they share with humans. I also can’t resist drawing their fluffy fur!
What do you feel is unique about the human and dog bond?
Humans and dogs have grown up together, living side by side, and learning to understand each other’s feelings and needs. This deep mutual understanding, trust, and love create an extraordinary connection. It’s a bond of pure companionship. Their loyalty to their families and love they offer is something special, (which I think) that humans can hardly replicate.
Dogs have a remarkable ability to make our lives better in numerous ways. They offer unconditional love and emotional support, no matter what challenges we face. Having a dog can significantly improve our emotional and mental well-being. They encourage physical activity through daily walks, and create a sense of responsibility. Just simply looking at dogs in parks makes your day much happier!
Are you planning to get a dog of your own in the future?
Absolutely! I have a deep desire to have a dog in my life in the future. However, I believe in being well-prepared for the responsibilities of dog ownership. Dogs not only bring joy, but also require care and attention. I want to ensure that I can provide a loving responsible home for a dog because they have the incredible ability to make us better human beings.
