About The Episode

Kristen Kidd’s mom was a geriatric nurse. As a kid, Kristen would sometimes hang out at the long-term care facility of the retirement home that she worked at. One of the things that caught her eye at a young age was what people decided to keep in their rooms. Everyone always had photos of their life – including their pets. She picked up a camera herself around 15, and the first subject she photographed were the residents at the facility, who she had gotten to know.

This influenced her own career, as Kristen went into a job as a social worker. It taught her a lot and gave her a lot of experience learning more about all different types of people. At the same time, her passion for photography had continued to grow and she started to do both jobs simultaneously. Eventually, after 13 years of social work, Kristen Kidd decided to go full time as a photographer – bringing together two of her passions and a unique perspective in observing and understanding the human experience.

Kristen has tow rescue dogs named Hudson and Neato. She adopted Neato from Harley’s Haven – a small rescue that’s near and dear to her heart. Through that rescue, she met and had conversations with a lot of women about their experiences with their own dogs. She realized that these stories should be documented, celebrated, and shared. Thus, the Woman’s Best Friend Project was born.

The Woman’s Best Friend Project is a twist on the classic trope of “Man’s Best Friend” and shedding a light on women’s stories with their dogs instead, who can have just as much of a connection to their dogs. The project is an annual coffee book, with each edition benefiting a different rescue (the first was for Harley’s Haven, and this year’s 2nd edition is for the Brandywine Valley SPCA). It combines Kristen’s beautiful photos with the stories of how dogs have impacted these women, such as a woman who suffered after losing her mother and found solace in a rescue dog.
